Since Chicago favorites Fall Out Boy last appeared at the Avalon in 2005, they’ve garnered an enormous amount of media attention, sold out arenas, and become “poster boys for the scene”. But the Friends or Enemies tour was designed to bring them back to where they started, making fourteen stops at smaller clubs across the country.
Anticipation rippled through the crowd on Saturday night as four darkened shadows took the stage to Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer”. Boasting a new stage set featuring the tarot theme from the upcoming release Infinity On High, the band tore into the first song off 2005’s From Under The Cork Tree, “Our Lawyers Made Us Change The Name Of This Song So We Wouldn’t Get Sued”. The setlist, a satisfying blend of old and new, led the band through their hit singles, including “Grand Theft Autumn” off 2003’s Take This To Your Grave.
Though the routine might be growing stale, there is no mistaking the dramatic improvement in their stage presence. Vocalist Patrick Stump no longer strains his vocal chords during “The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes” or “Dance, Dance”, and bassist Pete Wentz has a firm grasp on how to handle the crowd of teenage fans with his bass-licking antics. Energized and grinning, the band burned through a 90-minute set that culminated in the crowd-favorite “Saturday”, and ended on a high note as Wentz made his way down into the crowd to scream the final chorus along with the fans, a tradition that remains untouched by their fame.
