Released: 2003
Early 2003 witnessed a shift away from the stale
nu-metal days of old to more authentic punk-influenced
rock and melodic hardcore. Recently bands such as The
Used, Finch, Thursday, and Glassjaw have received
well-deserved critical praise and grabbed the
mainstream's attention, hopefully paving the way for
acts like Relavere Records' Endor. Their self-titled
debut EP showcases their style of catchy emotional
hardcore and captures the essence of their explosive
live show.
The disc kicks off with "Knifepoints Laminants,"
a track dominated by Matt Barcalow's powerful vocals
and the heavy riffs of guitarists John Romines and
Chad Phillips. "Silence Again" continues to express
and define their style, and successfully pulls in the
listener. Third track "Daylight" is driven by Hung
Nguyen's drumming and Barcalow's haunting lyrics:
"Save yourself from all the other sheep/ Save yourself
and say a prayer for me." The EP ends on a mellow and
experimental note with "The Steady Pace of Memory,"
which seems as if it was created for filler and is
easily the worst track on the disc.
Despite a weak ending, Endor's debut EP is quite
impressive and succeeds in building anticipation for a
full-length release. Endor is definitely a new and
exciting band to watch in the coming year.
Endor just wrapped up dates with Finch and Snapcase.
