Slightly monotonous but nonetheless a good, solid debut CD.
Although you may not have heard of Anberlin yet, it certainly won't be long before you do. Although they have only been a band for two years, the chemistry and sound present a different story. Fast paced yet melodic rock wrapped in catchy hooks make up the structure of this debut album from the young band. Decent lyrics and Morrisey-style vocals don't hurt much either.
"Blueprints" starts out with 'Readyfuels', a track that sets the pace for most of the album. A sing-along chorus and catchy beat will get you belting the lyrics at the top of your lungs in no time. The next track, 'Foreign Language' has simplistic and repetitive although true lyrics like "Boys speak in rhythem, and girls in chords". Trust me, that phrase won't be leaving your head any time soon. Tracks 3 and 4, 'Change The World (Lost Ones)' and 'Cold War Transmissions', both have a slightly darker tone to them, but lyrics that reach out and connect with the fans ("We could rewrite history…we are the lost ones"). Motivation anyone? Track 5, 'Glass To The Arson' is definitely one of my personal favorites. It's interesting sound sets it apart from the rest of the album, and really makes you perk up and take notice.
The first of the album's two slow songs, 'Autobahn', takes full advantage of the "effects" available in musical editing today. The slower pace gives singer Stephen Christian a chance to really show off what he's capable of. This continues in track 9, 'Love Song'. If this song isn't indication of The Smiths' influence, I don't know what is. The closing track, 'Naïve Orleans' is a perfect end to a good album. Not only does this song connect to the broken hearted, ("I've finally found that life goes on without you, and my world still turns when you're not around") but it is catchy and will keep you singing it long after you turn off your stereo.
Mature lyrics, good beats, and a talented voice make Anberlin a band you won't soon forget.
