Big thanks goes out to DJ for being awesome and sitting on a broken table, and to Ashley for helping me out with the interview.
Joanne: What inspired you to begin making music?
DJ: Uh, just that I like music a lot. Twisted Sister maybe, back in the day. Uh, I dunno. Jeff and I just used to play like backyard parties and shit, like a two man band. And people started liking it so, I dunno, we started playing it.
Joanne: How was it being on Warped this year?
DJ: It was rad, its like one of the best tours because you just get to hang out with so many people, like a lot of friends ya know, so its like so many of your friends bands at once. That's like the coolest part.
Joanne: You guys didn't even play Boston though, did you?
DJ: I don't remember. Did we not?
Joanne: I remember seeing you guys but then I didn't remember seeing you guys actually play.
DJ: Where are we? Boston?
Joanne: Yeah.
DJ: Oh shit, that's when our RV broke down and we didn't play that day. There's like two days we didn't play like that day and another day.
Joanne: Aw, that's depressing.
DJ: Yeah.
Joanne: How did you wind up opening for Bowling For Soup on this tour?
DJ: Ah, we became really good friends with them, partied a lot with them during Warped tour, played the same stage as them every day so we just became really good friends and we wanna keep..keep on partying.
Joanne: Keep staying on the seat.
*laughter, while DJ tries to stay on the seat*
DJ: It's actually fun though, dude. It's like a challenge.
Joanne: How has this tour been so far?
DJ: It's been the best tour ever. Like us, Bowling For Soup, Lucky Boys Confusion…
Ashley: Party hard.
DJ: Yeah, we fucking party hard.
Ashley: Me too.
DJ: After every show we just hit the bars it's like…
Joanne: Insanity.
DJ: Yeah, pretty much insanity.
Joanne: What's the worst part about being on tour?
DJ: Um, well, like Warped Tour the worst part is like no showers sometimes, or the long ass drives. But like this tour, there's nothing really bad about it. Like…let me think. Not getting to see my mom so much.
Joanne & Ashley: Awwww.
DJ: Yeah, you rarely ever get to go home. Even when you get home you have meetings and all this shit so like the last time we went home we didn't even get to see our families or go to our house or anything 'cause we'd have to run to the recording studio, then run to a meeting, then go do this MTV thing and then like to a show, ya know? That kinda sucked.
Joanne: That does suck.
Joanne: What is the most valuable thing you bring on tour with you?
DJ: My pillow.
Joanne: Your pillow.
DJ: Actually like three of my pillows. I have 3 pillows and like three dope ass blankets. Most people just have one pillow and like a crappy blanket or a sleeping bag but I have like three dope ass blankets and three pillows. I love my sleeping quarters.
Joanne: What are your plans for after this tour?
DJ: After this tour we're doing our UK tour. Go to Europe and shit.
Ashley: I'm going to England.
DJ: Really? Are you gonna come see us?
Ashley: When are you playing?
DJ: Our last show is like November first.
Ashley: Oh really, I'm going there the 12th.
DJ: Aw shit.
Joanne: What's your favorite venue to play?
DJ: Um, my favorite venue so far…I like the Glass House in Pomona. It's like one of the places where we always do our headlining shows, I dunno, its pretty cool. Like, you wanna hear a crazy show that we had there? You'll never believe it. 'Cause like a lot of bands, like we're big in that area and we have been for the last few years or whatever, so we hook up a lot of bands. Check it out, it was us headlining, and then Finch played with us because they're good friends with us, we've played a bunch of shows with them, and A Static Lullaby was on the bill, Lucky 7 opened and the special guest was Glassjaw. 'Cause Glassjaw was in town recording so that's probably like the craziest show.
Joanne: What's your least favorite venue to play at?
DJ: My least favorite?
Joanne: Yeah.
DJ: Duuuuuude. I don't know any really shitty venues anymore. Maybe, I'd say this one in Arizona, it's called…fuck, what was it called? *laughter* It was so bad I can't remember. Ok. Yeah Detroit. Keep in mind, I love Detroit but the fucking people at the venue are idiots. They…fucking suck. Lucky Boys Confusion got their van stolen. We got our big backdrop stolen.
Ashley: I stole it.
Joanne: What is the craziest prank you've ever pulled on another band?
DJ: We always have band wars and shit…one time Jeff, he went to a fucking, what do you call it, magic store or something and he got like blood capsules. And he came out and he was like dude, I'm not feeling good. And we're like what? And he's like I seriously think something's wrong and we're all like what? Then he starts like coughing and going down on the ground. And then he just starts spitting up all this gnarly blood all over his shirt, he ruined his shirt for the prank, and all over the ground. Call an ambulance, call a fucking ambulance, we're all like freaking out. And he like does that shit a lot. Like last week also we were in Utah and someone's like shooting off fireworks and he's with this chick and he's just like go along with it. He opens the door and comes in, what the fuck are you guys doing, get the first aid, call the ambulance and we're like what? And he's like holding her head, fucking idiots you hit her in the eye, you fucking hit her in the eye, and everyone starts freaking out like what are you talking about? *laughter*
*the tape fuzzed in the middle of DJ's answer to the prank question so some parts are missing, but after that it was okay*
Joanne: What's in your CD player, like what bands are you listening to?
DJ: Right now, Avenged Sevenfold is in there, it's a very good cd.
Joanne: I've never listened to them.
DJ: Avenged Sevenfold? Come on, dude. The new Story Of The Year CD. Um, what else.
Joanne: Thrice, Thrice is good.
DJ: Thrice? Yeah, Thrice is always good. Poison the Well, I like Poison the Well a lot. Army of Freshmen, the new Army of Freshmen.
Joanne: No Movielife?
DJ: Ah, I like the Movielife, a lot.
Joanne: It's depressing that they broke up.
DJ: They broke up?
Joanne: Yeah like two weeks ago.
DJ: Wow, I didn't even know that. It's like J. Lo and Ben Affleck.
Ashley: Did they break up?
DJ: I heard that today.
Joanne: If you could put together a dream tour who would be on it and why?
DJ: MC Hammer, Tina Turner, Elvis, and fucking…
Ashley: Those are the best ones so far.
DJ: We gotta get one more good one in there dude…
Ashley: You could get Madonna and Britney…
DJ: Yeah dude.
Joanne: Anybody else or is that it?
DJ: We should get like Michael Jackson.
Ashley: I wouldn't be attending that.
Joanne: If you could meet any person dead or alive who would it be and why?
DJ: Ummm…
Joanne: Everyone gets stuck on this question.
Ashley: Didn't someone think you said be once?
Joanne: Yeah.
DJ: Dude I just want to meet like…
Ashley: I want to meet Janis Joplin.
DJ: I don't want to meet any dead people dude. *laughter* I swear, I can't think of any but like Jennifer Aniston dude. I want to meet her. See if I can…
Ashley: You watch Friends?
DJ: Yeah dude, I watch Friends a lot.
Joanne: I think I'm the only person on the planet who has never watched that show.
Ashley: I don't watch it all the time but when I watch it, it's funny.
DJ: Yeah, I don't either anymore. I don't watch TV on tour, but I used to be a big fan of Friends. And *says name of show, I can't hear what it is* is my number one.
Joanne: I've never watched that show either.
DJ: Oh come on, you're missing out.
Joanne: What is something your fans would be surprised to find out about you?
DJ: That I have a girlfriend now and don't hang out with any girls ever. That's really suprising. *long pause*
Joanne: Okay. If you say so. *laughter*
DJ: It is, that's the most people are surprised about every night.
Ashley: So sweet.
Joanne: What question are you sick of answering?
DJ: How'd you get your name, Never Heard Of It. Then they always tell us the joke, I told someone I was coming to see Never Heard Of It and they're like never heard of it and I was like haha. *laughter* Then I have to pretend to laugh. Yeah, I mean everyone has the story and you have to pretend you've never heard it before but I've heard it like a million times.
Joanne: What advice do you have for up and coming musicians?
DJ: Do what you want to do because you want to do it..Pink..you like pink?
Joanne: Your hand.
Ashley: Oh yeah. I just met her last week.
DJ: Awesome dude. Uh, basically don't wait around for anything to come to you. Just go out and be yourself. A lot of people thing that if they're really good and have a good band that they are just going to get signed and gonna be huge and famous. But it's probably not going to happen unless you get out there and do something about it. Work hard, it doesn't come easy.
Joanne: Any last words or shout outs?
DJ: I wanna give a shout out to Ray Ray, Earl, Craig, Sha Sha, those mother fuckers are down at 7-11. *laughter* Oh man dude. Basically if you haven't come to a show, to a Never Heard Of It show, come hang out and party. It's more like our friends are our fans and our fans are our friends. We love you all.
Joanne: Thank you for the interview.
DJ: Thank you!
