Interview with Tyson and Nick from the All American Rejects
July 31, 2003 at Brockton Fairgrounds - Brockton, MA.

Alright, here's the deal on this interview. They put about four zines together and we took turns asking questions. My tape is screwed up, so I stole the transcript from Ant at Cellar Dweller Mag. Thanks!

Q: Have you ever been hit with anything interesting while playing on stage?
Nick: I got a pair on underwear with a phone number on them once. They were kind of small and I didn't call the number.

Q: What's your most embarrassing moment on stage been?
Nick: I fell off stage once because I was too drunk. That's kind of embarrassing. I think I played it off well though, the bouncer helped me back up.

Q: What's been your favorite day of Warped to play so far?
Nick: Uh, today in Boston of course. Duh! Um... They all blend together. All we see everyday is a parking lot. So I'm going to say, "Ya know that one day that we played in that parking lot. That was my favorite day."
Tyson: Today was to a certain amount.

Q: What are the plans for after Warped, touring wise?
Nick: After Warped Tour, we're going to Europe to do the Reading Festival and Live at Leads, and all that stuff. And lots more festivals around Europe. Then we come back here to do some shows in the states, then we go back to the U.K. to do a headlining tour. Then Japan, and then Christmas. So that's the rest of this year.
Tyson: And then a new record.
Nick: And then after that...

Q: What advice to you have for up and coming musicians?
Nick: I think Me First and the Gimme Gimmes said it best when they said "Stop forming bands, there's too many bands." But if you're going to form one anyway, I say, get in a van with a tape or a cd or whatever and just fucking go out there and play shows in the shittiest dives you can possibly find. Whatever you can do... play birthday parties. We've done our share of those. Do open mic nights, whatever. Do it all. Make everybody think what you're doing is the coolest thing on the planet and what ever they're doing sucks.

Q: What's your favorite part about playing the Warped Tour?
Nick: I get to eat 3 really good meals everyday. Most of the time I've been able to take a shower, which I didn't think I was going to be able to do because Warped Tour is summer camp basically. And you don't eat good food, or shower, or take shits at summer camp. That's my favorite thing, you can do that any where, its just a parking lot. Honestly, it was a surprise being able to eat good food, and shit in clean places and take showers, so that's the best part.

Q: This will be the only trivial question I'll ever ask you. Is that a tattoo of the Muppets?
Nick: Yes.
Q: That is awesome. Animal hanging out the window.
Nick: Thank you. Yes. It's actually the collector's glass that McDonald's put out in ‘81 to promote the Great Muppet Caper. That was more trivia than you needed for a life time.

Q: What's your favorite song to perform live?
Nick: Honestly, nothing beats the feeling you get when you play a song that, no matter who they are out there, they're going to recognize, whether they know who the hell you are or they go "oh these guys play that song." When you play the singles, that's one thing. But, playing wise, I'm going to say "The Last Song".
Q: (to Tyson) I take it that means the same for you.
Tyson: Yeah
Nick: Insert Tyson nodding here.

Q: What's the craziest thing a fan has done to get backstage?
Nick: A girl told me she was dying of cancer... she was lying so I made her suck me off.
Tyson: He's lying.
Nick: I was just embellishing on the fact that...
Tyson: You fucked her in the ass right?
Nick: Well... yeah. I was just kidding about the blow job part.

Q: Are you involved in the business at all?
Nick: Yeah, unfortunately. You do want to be smart and stay in it and not get fucked. You got to be involved in that part of the business. The unfortunate part of the business is promoting the product and all that shit. You know, keeping track of the numbers and shit, that sucks. This is our job. You don't fuck up your job to get fired. We try to do our best to be involved.

Q: What's your favorite part of touring in general?
Nick: Doing blow off chicks tits man. No, I'd say the fact that everyday I wake up and I'm like, "all right, I'm going to work today. What does that entail? Going to Starbucks, maybe taking a shower and playing music for 45 minutes." That's the best job ever and the fact that we can do that on the road- that's what being on tour is all about. The best part's everything.

Q: If you could put together your own tour, what bands would be on it? Nick: It would definitely be an all day thing, but nothing like summer camp (Warped Tour). Mine would be Def Leopard, Bon Jovi, Poison, Thin Lizzie, Iron Maiden, ACDC, In Excess, and Motion City Soundtrack.

Q: What are some of the bands your fans of on Warped Tour?
Nick: Well, obviously the bands like Rancid and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the bands that have been doing it for a while. There are lots of bands that we've met, like Suicide Machines and Simple Plan, that are super nice guys and even though we might not have heard anything buy them before this tour, we're definitely fans of them and their music because they're our buddies now.

Q: What bands are your biggest influences?
Nick: All the ones I just listed a minute ago. All those bands got us to start playing music in the first place.

Q: What question are you sick of answering?
Nick: Probably the basic ones just because we've been answering them for a long time. Not that any of them are bad questions, because some of them are vital, you know what I mean? When you go over seas and the record's only been out for a week, and you're doing the same interviews that you've been doing for the past year over there all over again and have to act just as excited about it- all of those questions.
